Collage Encaustic Class

Adding a layer of clear encaustic wax to collage adds a aura of mystery and age to the piece. Collage using a variety of paper ephemera onto a solid wood panel. Learn to add a floating effect by adding more collage elements within several layers of clear encaustic wax, then we use an etching technique with rubbed oil paint to scratch the wax for an antiquing effect. One of my most popular classes!

WIRE AND PAPER MASKS

Create one to three small wire and paper masks or 1 large mask.  This technique was developed by Cat and incorporates sculpting wire mesh with torn paper to create a three dimensional piece that can be hung alone or added to another piece.

I teach both a 1 day small mask class and a 2 day large  (human sized) mask class.  

Held in my studio, Santa Rosa, CA.

ASSEMBLAGE

Create an original piece of work that portrays who you are.  The Assemblage technique utilizes found objects with new pieces to create a new story.  You decide what it says by the objects you choose.  Create a shrine, or a story or an abstract piece - the possibilities are endless!  Cat supplies all the tools and attachments and helps you organize all your objects from home into a beautiful composition.  Boxes and some objects are available for sale.

ASSEMBLAGE CLASS: WHAT TO BRING TO CLASS?

BASES: Small wood box or old drawer no larger than 12 x 12”, Sturdy cigar box, Artist wood panel with deep sides, Flat piece of smooth wood

PAPER EPHEMERA: Light thin paper works best: letters, book pages (especially in other languages), maps, magazine photos, personal photos (copies not originals), gift wrap, paper from used tea bags, old typewritten pages, old journal pages, Fabric, etc.

OBJECTS: Small pieces that will fit inside your box and represent you and your life: ceramic, resin and wood tchotchkes, Old jewelry, fabric, natural elements (shells, sticks, bones, feathers, etc), metal (rusty or not), keys, old tools and mechanical parts, clock gadgetry, plastic toys, doll heads and parts, old coins, stamps, junk drawer stuff, silverware, antiques, memorabilia, beach glass, corks, ornaments, architectural elements, small frames, ribbons, spools, thread, old scissors, old paint brushes, wire, locks, tassels, old lipstick and perfume containers, old glasses frames, chains, used envelopes…

 ASSEMBLAGE WITH PLASTER & WAX

Create a small box assemblage with the added dimension of plaster and wax!  2 Day Class of 5 hours each day.

You supply the printed or found images and small objects.  Day 1: we compose the piece and prep the box with plaster and add decorative cornices to the box.  Day 2: Paint, images, objects and wax are added to finish the piece. 

One Day Plaster Carving with Encaustic Wax (Meditative Plaster Carving)

Learn the relaxing technique of carving an abstract relief into a prepared hardened plaster panel.  Carve where the plaster takes you with a sculpting tool, then add translucent layers of paint for dimension and finish the piece with a final coat of clear encaustic wax.  

This class is a one day tasting of my Spackling Encaustic Relief 3-day class in a one day 5 hour class. 

SPACKLING ENCAUSTIC RELIEF CLASS

Plaster adds texture and three dimensionality to paintings and assemblage work. Learn to incorporate objects to add texture, add and subtract forms in plaster, add translucent color using paint, attach three dimensional objects, then us the ancient technique of encaustic wax to add a soft finish.
